DRU assists educational authorities in planning and coordinating training programmes for adult, non-formal and continuing education personnel throughout the district. The instructional and training materials relating to adult, non-formal and continuing education will be developed by this branch. The necessary evaluation technique and tools will also be prepared for judging the effectiveness of the programme. Comprehensive development of the pre-school children and diffrerently abled children are yet another domain of this unit. Empowerment of LSGIs is also an important function of DRU faculty.
Functions of DRU

To assist educational authorities and district literacy mission in planning and coordinating training programmes for AE/NFE personnel’s, continuing educational centres, preraks and equivalency volunteers.

To serve as a nodal branch for organizing programmes of induction training and continuing education for instructors and supervisors/preraks of AE/NFE to be organized in the DIET.

To evaluate and monitor the quality and efficacy of training programmes for AE/NFE personnel help in and outside the DIET.

To maintain a database on all AE/NFE personals who undergo training at the institute and organize follow up activities pursuant to such training.

To undertake field interaction (including extension) work vis-a-vis the AE/NFE projects and centres in the districts, and to act as the referral unit for academic problems thrown up by the field in the areas of AE/NFE, CEC and equivalency programmes.

To help the district panchayath and AE/NFE authorities, in organizing, media supports for the AE/NFE programmes.

Preparing and publishing support materials and guidelines for CEC and equivalency programmes.

Conducting studies in connection with various activities under CEC and equivalency programmes.

To ensure full literate colonies in Kottayam District.

To enroll all the illiterate people in Open school.

To develop self confidence among continuing education learners.

To develop teaching efficiency among instructors and preraks.

To find out the effectiveness of study materials in pre-primary.

To ensure proper Teacher Learning Support system to children with special needs.

To assist LSGIs for the effective implementation of Education Projects.
